I recently came across a meme, shared by my local indie bookstore, that went something like this…
List of Books to Read Before You Die
1 – Any book you want.
2- Don’t read books you don’t want to read.
3- That’s it.
4 – Congratulations! You did it!
And really, it’s as simple as that. If you enjoy a certain genre, read it! I know folks tend to get a tad radical about such things, spouting off online about how one type of book is fab whereas another is trash. Sadly, such rants always seem to center on romance novels in one way or another. Our genre takes a beating, no doubt. Yet romance consistently outsells any other fiction genre. In 2017 romance/erotica netted $1.44 billion dollars with mystery/crime bringing in $728.2 million dollars at second place. That’s a rather substantial number of zeroes!
I’m not here to rail about all the reasons that romance is so looked down upon. We all know why. What I’m here to say is that if you like to read romance, then read it! If your jimmy-jam is westerns, read westerns, or lesbian fiction, or BDSM, or science fiction or gay lit or horror or fantasy or…
Well, the list of amazing genres and books is far too long for me to list them all. There is no list of books that every person must read. Read what you like when you like where you like. Don’t let people shame you about your reading choices. There is no reason to be embarrassed about reading a book, be it about sparkly vampires, red rooms, teenage wizards, hunky shifters, or any of the other examples of book-snobbery we see online. You do not have to justify your choices to anyone. Read what makes you happy. Life is too short to spend time with your nose in a book that doesn’t bring you pleasure.
I try to follow this advice when I write. I write what I love and what makes me happy. It might not be the hot new trend, but my books make my heart sing. Sometimes I feel like veering out of my lane a bit and dabbling with different genres such as a planned historical MM western or my Erie paranormal romances. Heck, I’ve even written a few MM zombie romances! My books are truly labors of love, no matter the genre.
Now, go forth and read (or write) those books you love!

If you’d like to give the above-mentioned Lake Erie books a go, now is a great time! I’ve recently completed a spin-off from the Erie Collection, a sexy and sultry MMM vampire tale called Nightside, that will release around Halloween. I had a BLAST writing this triad for Vincente, Akio, and Ian! They’re an amazing trio of men who love openly and honestly. I cannot wait for you to meet them on October 23rd!
You can now have all four of the Lake Erie pack novellas in this one reasonably priced collection! Included in the set are the previously released novellas: An Erie Halloween, An Erie Operetta, and An Erie Garden Party. To round off this whimsical and romantic shifter set is a brand-new novella, An Erie Uprising!
It’s been one wonderfully romantic year since skunk shifter Templeton Reed met Mikel Lupei, the alpha wolf of the Lake Erie pack. During that year, the two men fell in love and worked side-by-side to solve some tricky murder mysteries. They also opened up Lupei Manor, Mikel’s familial home, to other LGBTQ mystical beings in the Erie area. Sadly, being gay in the supernatural world Templeton and Mikel live in can be a death sentence.
During the past year, the magical world has slowly been coming unraveled. Civil unrest now runs rampant through the community as the lesser breeds revolt against the hateful dictates of the Elder Council. The uprising will surely touch every person residing in the magical world near Lake Erie. Will the flames of unrest and war consume everything and everyone Templeton and Mikel hold dear as well?
