“I know you’ll advance. I hope you can get me some tickets?”
“Of course,” I replied, seeing her light up in my mind’s eye. Man, I did miss my mother. Yeah, I said it. I loved my mother. Come at me if you think that makes me a sissy. I’d shown more than one fool what a queer Black man with a good left hook could do when called unfitting names. “I’ll get some for Lionel too.”
“Best get two for him but check on his schedule. He’s got finals coming up and that new girl of his is occupying all his brain space.” I chuckled at that. “What about you? Anyone new and interesting on your radar?”
I sat down by the window on a painted bench that overlooked the tiny patio and inhaled the warm spring air blowing in. I’d love to have flowers out there to look at but they’d just die from lack of attention over the summer.
Gabe’s handsome face popped up in front of me, a wavering form with sweet curls, bright blue eyes, and a smile that made me feel…weird. Not weird bad but weird…weird.
“No, no one really.” I sighed as my head began whipping up reasons to go to church now and not do bagels with the guys.
“That was a hearty sigh. Did you meet someone who broke your heart?”
“Since last Sunday?” I smiled at her. Lord but she did want her boys to get lucky in love, get married, and have a grandkid or ten. I knew she was lonely out there alone now that Lionel and I had moved out but even if I did have kids – and that was way in the future – she’d still be in Chicago and the grandbabies would be in Watkins Glen.
“Love hits fast and hard sometimes.”
Hmm, I didn’t know about that but I did know that liking someone sure did hit fast and hard. “Nope, no heartbreak. Just trying to decide if I should go do bagels and coffee with the guys or go to church.”
“Church?! Praise Jesus!”
“Mama…”

Hilarious last line! Bagels or church? Easy decision for me. Lol. Love how his mind bouncing back and forth fills in much about his upbringing and his past. Well done!
